Im developing as a photographer. Style wise. I love the authenticity of film and I shoot film but I also shoot digital as of recently and that opens the world up to editing and stylizing photos. The problem is that there are so many ways to make a photo look, its endless. Ive struggled with this over the past couple months. Do I edit or leave the photo as is? There is a good debate wrapped in this package and I’m sure it could get pretty heated in the photography community. Even with these few photos above, I struggled last night on how to edit and more importantly… why? After messing around with my workflow of tweaking and graining out the photos I realized that going into this really quick shoot with Sarah that I just wanted some natrual looking shots. Simple. No fluff. No crazy lighing. Just a face and see what came of it. So. Hence forth I go and post these bare and unedited which just freed me from chains I thought I was shackled to with upon entering into the digital world of cameras.

Boulder Colorado family photo shoot action… Luke, Megan and awesome little Noah. They tore it up on this windy fall day. Headed out to a local park for a relaxed time of picture snapping. They are a sweet little family. Luke is an iPastor over at Vinelife Community Church in Boulder, he takes care of a lot of different things over there hence the iPastor tag:) He’s also one of the talented musicians on the Resound Collective Vol. 1. Megan knows how to take care of people. Shes a fantastic cook and even better… she can cook up some gluten-free madness for us people who can’t eat the wheat! Noah, cool little one year old, chubby as heck and on the roam for toddler trouble. Great little family. I’m so stoked they trusted me with a camera:) By the way. It’s definitely official. I loved shooting this wedding.  I must thank Erik and Brianne for being freakin amazing! From the minute the day started to the last few people left dancing and drinking at the reception (at the killer Rembrandt Yard). And a HUGE thanks to Shannon for assisting, couldn’t have done it without you! We also set up the FOTOLOUNGE… find some of those shots HERE.

Shannon! She helped me out with the wedding and I definately would have been pulling my hair out if she wasn’t there. She’s an awesome photographer who has been growing tremendously as an artist. Definatley an inspiration and got me to shy away from my analog film attitude and give digital a try. Art is art no matter the medium. Anyways… she is awesome and I hope to shoot more with her!

A little while back I got to shoot my first couple. Erik and Brianne are freakin awesome! Good looking folks who love the heck out of each other. Its awesome to see… I also just shot their wedding yesterday. Sunday May 30th. Was my first wedding and was an eye opening experience for sure. Learned a lot and destroyed my feet while wearing my awesome TOMS. The shoes were great for the first 5 hours or so but after that, not so much:) Anyways, here are some varied shots from the engagement. I’ll have some killer wedding and FotoLounge shots up soon!

Polaroid SX-70

It was about 2 years ago when I looked at this old Polaroid camera that I had chillin on my shelf (because it looked really cool) and began to wonder if I could actually use it. So I jumped on Ebay and found some film for it. Boom. My life changed! No joke. From there I did a bit of research on cameras and came across the Polaroid SX-70 (Pictured above taken with an SX-70 on Polaroid 600 film). This is the tightest polaroid camera you’ll find, it shoots integral film which is the classic white boardered film that pops out of the noisy camera after the shutter is released. Seriously now is the time to jump on Ebay and find one for youself. Look for a folding model and anything BUT the Model 3′s. You’ll get the best quality images from these cams and they are SLRs so you get some awesome manual focusing abilities!

Simple Mustache Classification

The Mustache. I’ve tried it several times. A couple times a year I’ll let my beard grow out for a few months. After it gets really burley I’ll shave it off and try a few ‘stache styles. I’ll usually start off with a crazy looking bushy Fu Manchu that ends up looking ridiculous on me and so I’ll trim it up to something classic like the Walrus but that really doesn’t fit my face so I’ll thin that down to the Cheveron which ends up looking really creepy so I finally end up with the Toothbrush but I look like a Hitler follower, not cool. Back to a clean face.

This time around I while I was growing the beard a good friend of mine grew a ‘stache that fit him perfectly, not creepy, not ridiculous. Classic. That made me start thinking that maybe there is a style that will fit my face so I while my beard was growing I didn’t touch it, never trimmed it and each day combed the ‘stache hair off to the sides. Slowly but surely I had a nice Handlebar Mustache on its way to fruition and I was super stoked about it!

I picked up a little pair of grooming scissors along with a mustache comb and some wax. From here on out its just up keep and teaching the hair to grow the way I want it too! The wax (or even AXE paste) comes in handy and can tame stray hairs and help get good form and shape. I totally recommend you try to find your mustache. I’m pretty sure everyone has one that works and when it does its hands down the most amazing thing:) haha! Let me know if you sport one!

PX100 through a Polaroid SX-70

Finally got a pack of PX100 through my camera. Got some from a good shooting friend of mine, Mark. I was SUPER impatient and knew I wasn’t going to be able to get out of the house to shoot it any time soon so I blew through it really quick just to see it. I’d say its pretty awesome. Gonna pick up some PX600 next, supposedly its not as finicky as the 100. You see, you gotta keep it from light as soon as it pops out of the camera or else itll just get all blown out and its pretty heat sensitive. I definitely don’t have the hang of it. Its easier to shoot indoors and thats what I did so my results were pretty good, at least to me! What do you think about this stuff?

So, I’ll be posting from my iPhone most likely for a bit till I pick up a computer but anyways. I feel like I am in the midst of a major transition. I’ve been working for DPA Microphones for 3 years this July and it’s served its purpose, making money in a stable environment. Its become a safe haven of false stability for me and Im more and more growing into the artist that I really am and need to show it, to give what I’ve got, not to some machine but to people. I’m finally acknowledging my uniqueness and fact that I do have something legit to give to this world. AND you do to!! So, this transition Im talking about will hopefully get me freelancing full time soon or who knows, just as long as its mad creative.

With this blog, I’ve been really stuck in trying to figure out what this will be about and have used my ‘figuring it out’ as a crutch to not actually doing anything. Thats ending. I’m gonna figure it out and change this thing as we go.

Im gonna just post stuff. Hopefully cool stuff. I hope all that read this will enter in to discussion and collaboration and just plain spreading ideas and the love!

And another little diddle is that Im working on a portfolio site finally, which is a project in itself to organize and build without a computer of my own, so I’ll post a link from this blog to it soon but for those who read this post you can link to it here.

Molly Hunt - Senior Photo Shoot by Jarrod Renaud

So…. let me preface this a bit. This is the first time I shot with an SLR that wasn’t a Polaroid from the ’70′s. I rented a Canon 5D Mark II and a couple Speedlites on a friday evening and frantically learned how to use it before the next day. You see I signed up to do a senior portrait without ever doing one before and without ever shooting digital. Overall I’m stoked about the results. I feel like I just stepped on the tip of an iceberg. I learned a lot about what I want to do next time and also that shooting in freezing temperatures hurts the hands:) Also, first time editing photos, never thought I’d ever ‘edit’ photos, I’m so used to it just being there on film as it was and thats it. Even now posting these I think I need to touch up under her eyes a bit on some of these, lighten up those shadows? I feel like its cheating but is that what people expect from their portraits?
